How to Encounter the Lord and Walk with Confidence in Every Season
If your best friend called you on the phone and you didn’t have caller ID, would you recognize their voice?
You would’t need them to explain who they were. You’d know- because a relationship builds recognition. For many believers, the question isn’t whether God speaks. It’s, can I hear Him… can I trust what I am hearing?
The Good news is this: hearing the voice of God is not reserved for a select few. Jesus said His sheep know His voice. That means listening is meant to be normal, relational, and accessible. Let’s talk about what they really looks like.
Before We Go Further… What This Can Change
As you read, imagine life feeling a little quieter on the inside.
- Not Perfect
- Not Effortless
- But Anchored
Many people discover that learning to hear God’s voice brings:
- More confidence instead of constant second-guessing
- Peace when making decisions
- Clarity about the next step- even when the whole path isn’t available
- A more relational connection with God
- Freedom from the pressure to “get it right”
You’ll also gain
- A biblical framework for hearing God’s voice
- A simple, practical approach to listening prayer
- Tools to discern God’s voice from your own thoughts
- Gentle prompts you can use right away
- An invitation to receive guided support through a TruHope session
If you give this post a few minutes of focused attention, here’s the trutch to hold onto:
Hearing God’s voice isn’t for the spiritually elite- it’s part of your inheritance as a child of God.
Does God Still Speak Today?
Yes—clearly and consistently.
Jesus said:
“My sheep hear My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)
Not might hear.
Not occasionally hear.
Hear.
Throughout Scripture, God speaks to guide, comfort, correct, and lead:
- “The sheep hear his voice… he calls his own sheep by name and leads them.” (John 10:2–4)
- “Listen to me; pay attention to the words from my mouth.” (Proverbs 7:24)
- “You will pray to Him, and He will hear you.” (Job 22:27)
Prayer was never meant to be one-sided.
Prayer is not doing something—it is being with Someone.
Even Jesus regularly withdrew to listen to His Father (Luke 5:16; Luke 6:12). If Jesus needed space to listen, we do too.
Frank’s Story: Faithful, Yet Searching
Frank spent decades serving God with passion. As a co-founder of a missionary organization, he watched God transform lives across the world. He knew obedience. He knew purpose.
But when Frank retired, something shifted.
Though he continued serving at church, the clarity and excitement he once carried felt distant. He prayed and asked God what was next—but the answers didn’t seem to come. He felt unsure of his purpose in this new season.
Remembering how TruHope had impacted him in the past, Frank decided to schedule a session, hoping for clarity.
During his session, something unexpected happened.
As Frank quieted his heart, God began speaking through images and visions—scenes from his past ministry, people he had served, places he had walked faithfully. But this time, God was showing him something new.
When Frank asked the Lord what it meant, the answer came clearly:
“I am not finished with you yet.”
God revealed a new path—one that would draw on Frank’s past experiences but lead him into uncharted territory. There was no rush. Just trust.
Frank left the session with renewed hope and confidence, reminded that God is faithful in every season. Today, he walks with anticipation instead of uncertainty, trusting God’s unfolding plan.
Understanding How God Speaks: Logos and Rhema
God always speaks in alignment with His Word—but He speaks in different ways.
Logos is the written Word of God. It grounds us and safeguards truth.
Rhema is the living, personal word—the timely message the Holy Spirit applies to a specific moment.
“The Spirit gives life.” (John 6:63)
Rhema never contradicts Logos. It brings Scripture to life in personal, meaningful ways—just as it did for Frank.
Three Keys to Hearing the Voice of God
Let’s keep this simple and practical.
- Quiet Your Heart
“I will stand at my guard post… and watch.” (Habakkuk 2:1)
God’s voice is often gentle. Noise—external and internal—can drown it out.
Helpful ways to quiet yourself:
- Find a still place
- Release distractions (keep a notepad nearby)
- Confess sin and receive His righteousness
- Worship or focus on Scripture
- Imagine sitting with Jesus
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
Stillness isn’t emptiness—it’s attentiveness.
- Fix Your Eyes on Jesus
Habakkuk didn’t just listen—he watched.
God often communicates through:
- Thoughts
- Pictures or impressions
- Scripture coming alive
- Inner knowing or peace
This is biblical:
- “Fix your eyes on Jesus.” (Hebrews 12:2)
- “I saw the Lord ever before me.” (Acts 2:25)
- John heard, saw, and entered God’s presence (Revelation 4:1–2)
Faith engages the eyes of the heart.
- Tune Into the Flow
Jesus said:
“Rivers of living water will flow from within.” (John 7:38)
God’s voice often flows naturally—not forced or dramatic. Learn to notice what gently surfaces when your heart is focused on Him.
Write It Down and Test It
“Record the vision.” (Habakkuk 2:2)
Writing anchors what God reveals and helps bring clarity later.
Afterward, test what you heard:
- Does it align with Scripture?
- Does it reflect Jesus’ character?
- Does it bring peace and fruit?
Remember, there are three voices—God’s, your own, and the enemy’s. Discernment grows with practice and wise support.
A Simple Listening Prayer Process
Here’s a clear way to begin today:
- Set aside 10–20 minutes
- Quiet your heart
- Invite the Holy Spirit
- Fix your eyes on Jesus
- Ask one gentle question
- Listen without striving
- Write down what comes
- Test it later with Scripture
Helpful prompts:
- “Lord, what would You like to speak to me about today?”
- “How do You see me?”
- “Is there anything holding me back?”
- “Is there someone I need to forgive?”

Final Encouragement
You don’t need to be perfect to hear God.
You just need to be available.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5–6)
God is still speaking.
And you were always meant to hear Him.
